Mettler-based Dance Educator Certification


Mettler Studios has developed an Apprentice Program which leads to certification by Mettler Studios as a Mettler-based Dance Educator.

The program seeks to advance the legacy of Barbara Mettler as well as develop work based on her principles by providing in-depth training for third generation teachers of Mettler-based dance. Apprentices are chosen from students who participate in the Mettler-based Dance Teacher Training and Follow up Mentoring Program.


The Apprentice Program consists of at least 500 hours of experiential study including 300 hours of Mettler-based dance teacher training/ workshops and 200 hours of mentored teaching of Mettler-based dance; demonstration of Mettler-based dance skills; and theoretical knowledge of Mettler’s work as well as an understanding of related somatic approaches. To become certified, apprentices must demonstrate understanding of principles of Mettler-based Dance and competence in teaching this material in a variety of settings, at least one of which needs to be an adult recreational class of at least 6 sessions.

Mary Ann was a dance assistant to Barbara Mettler and a member of her professional dance companies in 1983 and 1990-91. She has been offering Mettler Studios’ workshops and teacher training since the 1990's and began her Mettler-based teaching in the 1970’s to people of all ages.

Karenne H. Koo, Arizona
Karenne has studied Mettler-based dance since 2013 and is the co-founder of
Dancesquences, Inc. with a mission to advance inclusion through movement and dance. In addition to her teaching in Arizona and the US, her work has taken her to Vietnam, Indonesia, and Peru.

Kyla Ferguson, Massachusetts
Kyla has practiced Mettler-based dance since 2006, including being in several performance projects. She has taught dance in schools, after-school programs, programs for people with disabilities, and the general public. Kyla is also a yoga teacher, clinical social worker, and reiki practitioner in private practice.
